The weather may be causing discombobulation, but the case to reflect it has been a delight to put together - a celebration of extremes, from the zingy-springy to the velvety-cosy. There is the terroir-driven Alsace Pinot Blanc from Gresser, whose multiple soil types and fascinating range of terroirs add nuance and complexity to the wines, there is the the Bande de Sauvages with its floral salinity and gentle cloudiness providing a glass of a more natural style. And on the bright light end of the scale we adore the ‘Plume’ chardonnay, crisp and light and so gluggable (which, at just 9%, you are free to do!).
Amongst the reds we must highlight the Close Sénéchal Bourgueil, something a little special to celebrate our work with famed winemakers Catherine and Pierre Breton - a wonderfully mature Bourgueil to delight and savour. Trevor has worked with the family for over 25 years and he says that his recent tasting with them in Paris was one of the highlights of the trip. The ‘Le Vallon’ is showing a freshness which belies its deep colour and made from fascinating ancient varietals local to the Gaillac region; dark too is the 1883, ideal for those frustratingly chilly evenings and a real staff favourite - as is the Claret, a favourite of all of you in fact and with very good reason. And friends, we may be drenched. We may be hail-bruised, we may be windswept, but springtime is looming and to reassure ourselves of the fact we have two rosés - including the glowing Provence delight that is the Corail Rosé, a little darker than the region's more mass-produced bottles, and more interesting too, but with all of the freshness and saline joy.
