Patron Saints and Laden Plates
As the days draw in, thoughts turn to full glasses and fuller plates. We hesitate to mention festivities mere days into the start of Autumn, but we are reminded that long before Christmas feasting there were Winter celebrations in observation of a great many things, to comfort through the lengthening nights and guard against the cold.
Do treat this reminder in the same spirit: whether you are gathering with colleagues to worship at the alter of that elusive divinity Santa Secretum or whether you are gathering loved ones whom you have missed throughout the year to raise a glass to St. John (the Apostle - the patron saint of friendship!), we would like to tell you about St. JOHN Maltby, your very own space for succour or celebration throughout the Winter.
The restaurant is yours. At one long table as many as 30, or as few as 12, can feast from dishes piled high with delights from chef Alex Szrok who, with Fergus, has put together a veritable cornucopia of menus to share. The space is intimate and the kitchen is open; the resulting effect is that of having a private chef for you and your guests.
For both lunches and dinners there is no hire fee to have exclusive use.
The Christmas menu takes effect, as you would hope and expect, only from December 1st. Before then we have our Winter Feasting Menu which can be found here.
We have a canapé menu too, should you wish to feed those who are milling and sipping before sitting. For larger and more informal gatherings we can accommodate up to 45 and accordingly have a standing menu to keep hands and hearts happy. Click here to peruse.
Having the restaurant to yourself offers freedoms untold! That no-music-no-decoration policy which we have held since our inception? The space is yours, we will keep your secret! If you do wish to stray from our principles and deck the halls, then lovely Grace Mary has put together a little range of decorative delights for you, to suit all pockets. Full of fragrant foliage, bright blooms and berries... and all at 'mates rates' in the spirit of that other St. John.
