This is our little case of fun – wines that don’t conform to traditional wine making styles, most are new additions to our range. We have selected 3 white and 3 reds. We have a fresh and aromatic gros manseng– the L’ete has a sweetness to the wine, without being ‘sweet’ due to its great balance with fresh acidity –it has summery floral notes and freshness. The Creux de Nid Blanc is a stalwart on our list; it is an experimental grape that’s been crossed and is naturally resistant to disease. In contrast we have included the new Cuvée Georges from our new Jura producer –made in an oxidative style commonly found in the region –and gives a sherry-like, nutty, salty character. We find this wine has a freshness and weight that makes it a compelling wine.

Many of our reds have low levels of added sulphur, and this year it’s been rewarding to find 2 excellent examples that tend to have a more traditional flavour profile than many of the more natural styles. Of all the wines we have discovered this year, Bordeaux producer Sichel surprised us most. Their 1883 – 100% Merlot with no sulphur. Fresh, dark fruited, elegant and smooth. Better yet kept open for several days (in a cool place such as your fridge) the wine continues to improve. Alongside; another no sulphur red – from Lascaux in the Languedoc they have produced their Garrigues with sulphur and without – here we include their new Sans Sulphites. (Besides working as a preservative, sulphur can reduce the brightness in red). Lastly, is a new cuvée from our friends at Chasselay (there is a white sister wine made by their friend Vincent Caillé in Muscadet) –the wonderful Je t’aime mais je soif this is made using traditional carbonic maceration and natural yeasts. It is savoury, a little tangy with fine, grippy tannins.
