Many moons ago on trip in the Alsatian boondocks we stopped on a whim at a winery late in the afternoon where they were loading a truck in the yard. We properly tasted Edelzwicker (a blend of what’s left only once drunk locally by the glass) that day and met Éric who was to become a long-time producer of Alsace wines for us. He was surprised when we pointed to a pallet of said Edelzwicker and then asked to taste it. We recently tasted his 2019 Sylvaner, one of the Alsace varietals which will often be blended or drunk locally. Eyebrows raised, tasted and retasted this Sylvaner outshone any Edelzwicker. Lemony notes, clean and fresh on the palette with good acidity to the finish, a little taste of the ordered vineyards and little villages of a much historied region.
