This warm month we turn to the fresh and light, but with none of the disappointment that comes from flimsy wines which disappear on the palate. Built to refresh, yes, but to divert and fascinate too – Our theme is ‘pale and interesting’!

Rosé is often overlooked as a full and worthy style (how often does a wine list feature a grudging single bottle?!) but not us! Here we have FOUR, showcasing intriguingly differing styles – but all dry and all perfect for these early Summer days.

Our whites, too, are chosen to intrigue. The Chalasse, from our new Jura producer Domaine des Ronces, is biodynamic, aromatic, savoury and a little earthy – lifted by fresh citrus and mineral undertones. Minerality is a strong driver of the delicate, aromatic and very pretty Pierres Rousses, too, from icons of the natural wine movement, who have made a Vouvray reminiscent of a Chablis. Stunning. Le Clos Blanc is lush and textured with ripe stone fruit, and another textural, soft and earthy delight is our beguiling Bordeaux Blanc.

To the reds, lighter-bodied and happy to take a chill, first is the (beautifully labelled) Les Flingeurs, keeping your interest with an unusual 100% Negrette, and another unusual single varietal is our own Boulevard Napoleon Cinsault – very, very drinkable! The MerSy is easy-drinking too, with fine tannins, and if a little heavier is the order of the day you must try Chasselay’s Morgon ‘Corcelette’, an interesting Gamay from an interesting Cru Beaujolais, riper than previous years and with power and presence.

A case which is as fascinating as it is drinkable!
